Tips: How to lower ripple nose of switching power supply (SMPS)?

1. Strengthen the inductor and filtering of output capacitor

According to a formula about the switching power supply, current fluctuation in the inductor forms up an inverse relationship with the inductance. In addition, output ripples constitute inverse relationship with capacitance. Increase of inductance and output capacitance can reduce ripples, but this measure just plays a minor role.

2. Secondary smoothing means adding another LC filter

LC filter performs well in inhibiting noise ripples. To reduce ripples of SMPS power supply, users shall select appropriate inductors and capacitors to form up a filter circuit according to frequency of ripples to be removed.

3. Connect switching power supply output to LDO filter

It serves as an effective way to reduce the SMPS ripples and noises. This method can help users maintain a constant voltage without changing original feedback system, but it brings about highest costs and energy consumption.

4. Connect capacitor C or RC to diode in parallel

Values of capacitor C or RC connected to the diode in parallel can be determined only by repeated experiments. If the values are set in a false way, it may cause serious oscillating.

5. Diode post inductance (EMI filter)

It is a common way to curb high-frequency noise of the switching power supply. Users need to select appropriate inductors according to frequency of noise. This method can effectively inhibit noise, but it shall be noticed that the rated current of inductors must comply with actual demands.
