Tips: Working Principles of Self-aligning linear bushings

Linear bushings are linear bearings that use a round shaft for the guiding axis. They are engineered with load-bearing plate, a ball retainer, steel balls and caps or rings, and seals. Traditional linear bushings feature point contact between the balls and load plates, thus minimizing the friction while limiting the load capacity. However, most current designs have changed from point contact to conformity by incorporating a groove in the load plate for better conformity with the load-carrying balls. This change in design increases the load capacity by three times that of a traditional design.

Self-aligning linear bushings can rotate in the pitch and yaw directions, which equips them with the capability to compensate for flatness or alighment errors or deflection in the shaft. This self-alighment capability is attributed to the design of the load bearing plates, including sharply crowned designs, gradually crowned designs or radiused designs.

Sharply crowned designs boast bearing plates that are thinner on the ends than in the middle, enabling the plate to rock around a central point. This equips the bushing with a misalignment tolerance of ±0.5 degree.

Gradually crowned load plates work in the same manner as sharply crowned designs, but have more contact area between the load plate and the bore, which reduces contact stress and also the likelihood of the bearing plates becoming embedded in the bore, thus maintaining the proper clearance between the shaft and the bushing.

Radiused designs include an outer ring along the center of the bushing housing. With this ring, the bearing plates are given a hardened surface to contact. Such a design allows the load plates to self-align in all three directions: roll, pitch and raw.
