Tips: Working principle of insulation resistance tester

Insulation resistance tester, also known as digital insulation tester, Megohmmeter, Megger insulation tester adopts the embedded industrial SCM real-time operating system, with digital analog pointer and digital segment code display in perfect combination. ATO series of Megger insulation meter has a variety of test voltage options, large capacity, strong anti-interference, AC and DC dual-use, simple operation and so on. It is an ideal tool for measuring the insulation resistance of large-capacity transformer, current transformer, generator, high-voltage motor, electric capacitor, power cable and arrester.

Insulation resistance tester is mainly working by using a voltage exciting the tested device or circuit, and then measuring the current generated by the excitation, using ohm's law to obtain the resistance. For example, the testers apply a much higher voltage when making resistance measurements than the ohmmeter capabilities available on a digital multimeter (DMM). Megohmeters usually use voltages ranging from 50V to up to 5kv; a typical DMM has a voltage of less than 10v. For insulation test, it require measuring very large resistance value, the capability up to 10 TΩ, and requires a higher voltage.
