Tips: Variable frequency drive lightning protection measures
- To prevent the destruction of surge voltage, a varistor can be installed to the VFD input terminal, of which the withstand voltage should be lower than the voltage of power module to protect the components not being breakdown.
- Use a circuit breaker generated low surge voltage, as well as a varistor.
- When the transformer primary side is disconnected, VFD can be disconnected earlier by program control. At the same time, it also needs to be added the relevant varistor protection, through the excitation storage energy calculates resistance value. In addition, main circuit should use special arrester and fuse.
At the same time, VFD is generally equipped with lightning absorption network, mainly to prevent instantaneous lightning intrusion and causing damage. In the actual operation, especially in the case of the power cord overhead, the absorption network alone cannot meet the requirements. In lightning areas, this problem is particularly important. If the power cord is overhead, VFD should install with dedicated lightning arrester at the power wire, or according to specifications bury steel pipe for special ground protection in the distance 20m away from VFD.
