Tips: Variable frequency drive selection precautions
- The purpose of using VFD: Constant voltage control, constant current control or others.
- The load type of the VFD: Such as vane pump, displacement pump or others, pay special attention to the load performance curve, the performance curve determines the applications method.
- The VFD and the load matching problem:
1) Voltage matching: The rated voltage of VFD should be accordance with the rated voltage of the load.
2) Current matching: For ordinary centrifugal pump, VFD rated current and motor rated current should be accordant. For special loads such as deep water pumps, should refer to the motor performance parameters, use the maximum current to determine the VFD current and overload capacity.
3) Torque matching: This situation may occur when a constant torque load or a deceleration device is present. - When using VFD to drive high-speed motor, due to high-speed motor reactance is small, higher harmonics increase may cause output current value increases. So for high-speed motor, the capacity of VFD should be slightly higher than for ordinary motor.
- If the VFD will use long cable, should take measures to suppress effect from the long cable to the ground coupling capacitor, in order to avoid insufficient output of the VFD. So in this case, should choose a VFD with higher capacity or install a reactor on the output terminal.
- For some special applications, such as high temperature or high altitude, these situations will cause the VFD derating capacity, and should choose a higher capacity VFD.
