Tips: Switching power supply vs. linear power supply
Switching power supply (SMPS) depends on breakover of MOS transistors between upper and lower bridges. Current flows in through MOS transistors of upper bridge and then gather electric power at the coil by its storage function. At last, the power supply closes MOS transistors of the upper bridge and opens those of the lower bridge. The coil and capacitor would supply power to external part. Then, switching power supply would close MOS transistors of the lower bridge and reopen the upper bridge to let the power in. The foresaid process would be repeated. MOS transistors need to be opened alternatively, so it is called switching power supply.
Linear power supply is different from switching power supply. It is equipped with no switches, so the upper hose keeps draining off. MOS transistors of some linear power supplies emit lots of heat. Excessive electric power is converted to heat. It can be found conversion efficiency of linear power supply remains very low. When components are stuck in high temperature, their life span will be reduced and their actual effect will be influenced.
