Tips: Different working modes of switching power supply and linear power supply
Power devices of linear power supply operate in linear status. In other words, the power devices never stop once started, so they perform poorly in terms of their working efficiency which proves to be 50-60%. As required by its working mode, linear power supply must be equipped with a step-down transformer to help it complete the transformation from high voltage to low voltage. Then, the voltage would be output as DC voltage through rectification. Its working mode determines its poor performance in size, efficiency and calorific value. However, the linear power supply also has advantages. It generates less noise due to less ripples and satisfactory adjustment rate. The linear power supply is applicable to artificial circuit and various amplifiers.
Power devices of switching power supply operate in switching status with fast frequency (power devices switch at a frequency of 100-200 KHz and the module power supply operates at a frequency of 300-500 KHz). Their switching status improves performance of switching power supply in power loss and working efficiency. However, it comes up with higher requirements for transformers. The transformers applied to switching power supply must be made of materials with high magnetic conductivity. They are designed to achieve an efficiency of 80-90%. The switching power supply is characterized by higher efficiency and smaller size, but it appears poorer than linear power supply in terms of ripples and adjustment rates of voltage or current.
