Tips: Types of switching power supply (SMPS)

Switching power supply is divided into DC and AC types. The DC type operates on basis of DC/DC convertors. In other words, categorization of DC switching power supply depends on that of DC/DC convertors.

DC/DC convertors are categorized into two types by the standard of whether there is electric isolation between input and output voltage. Those with electric isolation are categorized as isolated DC/DC convertors and those without electric isolation are categorized as non-isolated DC/DC convertors.

AC/DC conversion means converting alternating current into direct current. Its power flow proves to be bidirectional. Power flow borne by power supply flow is called rectification and that borne by returning power supply flow is called active inversion. It can be categorized into half-wave circuit and full-wave circuit according to the wring mode, classified into single phase circuit, three-phase circuit or multi-phase circuit according to the number of phases, or divided into one quadrant circuit, two quadrant circuit, three quadrant circuit and four quadrant circuit according to the operational quadrant.
